What is in bloom now at my Place?

Mine is a landscape garden grounds.   Most rooms differ one from another.  Most of the structure is managed by conifers.....after all, the winter landscape  in Minnesota is as long as  Spring, Summer, and Autum put  together.......six months if you really want to know.; Color is very important and is highly valued in my grounds.   But it is only equal to texture and secondary to form, both shape and size. I control color in a number of...

Some Points about Pruning……Chapter I

Spring is probably the best time to 'prune' plant material in your garden, especially if your garden is a landscape garden..   I am about to give a demonstration for a dear client and friend of mine in her landscape garden Masteripiece installed about four or five years ago.    The 'show' will be also attended by her neighbor.    I shall have to rush. The vast majority of homeowners nearly everywhere in these parts of the good...

Reviewing the Frost Damage of This Past Week

During the evenings of the early part of this week,  our Twin Citiy, Minnesota area was hit with night frost lows of 27F, 26F, and 32F, although at my place Wednesday evening's frost of 32F didn't arrive.   Instead my landscape garden escaped the third day of damage with a low of 35F. The damage had already been done.    The blooms of my 40 year old PJM Rhododendron were on the ground by Tuesday morning.   Those...

The Spring following the Winter without a January or February

It is cold today....for this Spring, that is.....windy and 40 degrees F. ......a  normal Spring after a normal Winter, but not for a winter without a January and February, that is this past  season of little precipitation and no traditional Minnesota wind and cold.   Last year we wouldn't have noticed. Checking out our landscape grounds, I noticed last Saturday, March 24, 2012,  that the following are now  in bloom performance:      Merrill Magnolia,  Leonard Messell Magnolia,  Weekend Forsythia,...

Why Today’s Cultural Disdain for the Landscaping Industry?

I have never been to Japan, but have spent almost a year of my life  roaming around the traditional landscape gardens of  England, Scotland and Wales.   I moved from one paradise on to another, again and again.   The United Kingdom government is interested in accruing money for the National welfare, and know full well, the art of the Landscape Garden is the Kingdom's most cherished art form.....financially, in  numbers of visitors to these Edens, and historically the...

When is a Weed a Weed?

When is a weed a weed.   When it is a dandelion? Well, maybe....usually yes, because dandelions makes a lovely lawn appear ugly, expecially when the seeds are produced.   Because the seeds are produced in such numbers, dandelions become a more noticeable weed. In our Masterpiece Landscaping dictionary,  a weed is defined as "a plant out of place". Our Masterpiece Landscape garden where I live doesn't have much  lawn.    If there are dandelions,  they occur occasionally...

Wow! A Twin City Winter Without a January and February!

There  may be some global warming folks, but it was not caused by mankind and will not be a threat to human existence nor the Earth itself.    Do you remember that terrifying 8.9 earthquake  last March off northeastern Japan?   Well, it seems it tampered with the length of an Earth day a bit.    Read the following article from SPACE.com: HOW THE JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE SHORTENED DAYS ON EARTH "The massive earthquake that struck northeast Japan Friday...

Garden paths through the Beautiful Winter Garden of Snow Flowers

How many times  a day do you enjoy walking your garden paths? Have you noticed how much more fulfilling these  walks are in winter than in any other season of the year?    There may be less color;  the fragrances are fewer or more hidden; the sounds are clearer in the particular, but silent in the mass, more than the other  six months of each year.   However, in  no other  daytime can the forms of the uprights show...

Not All Minnesota Winters are Equal

Winter Twin Cities, Minnesota, 2011 has not yet arrived.   The joy is mixed with sorrow at Masterpiece Landscaping, at least from this writer's perspective. The Joy:   For most of this past month, December, there has been little precipitation, meaning no snow.   For this past month I have been able to stroll along my garden paths and pretend I am working.  I always enjoy its beauty.   Yes, the ground is frozen which eliminates planting or transplanting/   That suits...
